It was a Japanese stronghold in the pacific with over 21,000 infantry, over 13,000 yards of tunnels, 24 tanks dug in 90 mortars, 69 anti-tank guns, and over 200 machine gun nests. From December of 1945 the island was bombed for 72 straight days. Then the marines assaulted on February 19, 1945.
